ENCYCLICAL ON THE EARTH
Pope Francis has issued an Encyclical Letter ‘LAUDATO SI’ (PRAISE BE) which will receive a warm welcome from all who are concerned about the care of the Earth and the abuses which threaten the wellbeing of our planet. The Pope goes to great lengths to echo the many and various points put forward by environmentalists. But the letter is written to record the Church’s teaching, though it is not aimed at Catholics alone, unlike most previous Encyclicals, but ‘addressed to all people of good will’ (Ch2,1). It is clearly written with the tacit acknowledgement that those people who have been most influential in forming and passing on environmental standards have generally disregarded any consideration of belief in God and where He might fit into the picture.
Chapter 2 is the core of the Encyclical, a masterly and moving summary of Catholic teaching on the relationship between God, human beings and the earth. It will probably be the yardstick by which the morality and legitimacy of environmental theory and practice will be measured by the Church for centuries to come.

Community Assoc Fundraiser
Kilbrittain Community Association is starting a fundraiser this weekend. Many of you will know the late Joe Lynch who was Chairman of the Association for many years. One of the many things Joe did to raise money for the Community, was to collect spare change from people in a 5 litre glass bottle. He was often seen at local events with the bottle and when the bottle got too heavy to carry, he had a little trolley on wheels made for it by Paul Hunt and continued to fill the bottle. Unfortunately Joe was taken from us far too soon and now the Community want to raise money with that bottle. A “Guess how much is in the Bottle” competition is starting and the prize is €1,000 for whoever guesses nearest the amount in the bottle. People will be calling to your homes in the next few weeks and we would appreciate your best support in this novel fundraising effort. The bottle will be broken and the money counted at an event in the Hall on the 3rd Oct.

Mass Envelopes
The boxes of Mass Envelopes for 2016 are ready for distribution now. We can’t express adequately how grateful we are to those who distribute these boxes and how essential their labours are. Distributors are asked to call to the Parochial House after Masses next weekend or anytime during the week.
For the past two years, the allocation of envelopes hasn’t been organised successfully by the parish office. In order to put his right once and for all, every house is getting a box of envelopes this year. There will be a written explanation accompanying each box as to how the system will work. In brief:
1. We will keep NO account of what number box goes to which house BUT
2. If you are going to use the envelopes, you will put your name and townland on the FIRST envelope you hand up (or at least one during the year).
3. Fr Cremin alone will open envelopes which have names on them, so that nobody else will be aware of what you are giving. He will also record your name against his list of numbers, which will be kept private.
4. Once you have sent in an envelope with a name on it, every other week your number will identify you. Counting volunteers will never need to, or wish to, match numbers with names.
All this will enable us by this time next year to have an error-free record of all who use envelopes, as a basis for future distribution and accountability, eliminating all problems with duplicate numbers or confusion about old numbers.
